Seroquel is an antipsychotic, which means it is used to treat hallucinations and/or delusions. It is considered an “atypical” antipsychotic because it is less likely to cause the neurological side effects that often occur in older antipsychotics. The atypicals are also called “second generation antipsychotics.”
All antipsychotics work by blocking the Dopamine-2 receptors in the brain. Seroquel also blocks a few other receptors, including muscarinic (acetylcholine) receptors, serotonin-2A and 2C receptors, histamine receptors, and alpha-1 norepinephrine receptors. The side effects are mostly from the blockade of histamine, acetylcholine, and alpha-1 receptors. Some side effects are sedation, dry mouth, weight gain, and dizziness.
Besides the treatment of psychosis, Seroquel has also been approved for treatment of bipolar mania and bipolar depression. It is also used as a sleep aid and to reduce anxiety.
may cause drowsiness, dizzyness, constipation or dry mouth. it also may raise blood sugar if diabetes is a concern. they use it to control manic phases of bipolar or delusions, among other things. but it works for me. i’ve been on it for over 2 years and i think it’s the best thing i’ve ever taken.
