Any Suggestions On How To Combat Hangover Effects From Seroquel?

Posted by admin on Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I am currently taking 300 mg of Seroquel, 100 mg of Lamictol, and 500 mg of Dilantin. I wake up in the morning dragging pretty badly, which lasts for several hours. I’ve been told that it is likely the seroquel that is causing it. Since it has worked for my bipolar disorder, my doctor is hesitant to take me off of it. Any thoughts on how I can prevent the after effects?

I, too, went through the hangover effect when I started taking Seroquel about 5 years ago. What the other posters are saying is the only thing that worked for me, and that was taking it earlier if you only take it for bedtime. I, now, take mine at 8pm, for a bedtime of 10:30. I do not have the hangover effect anymore, unless I take it late….then the hangover still comes.
If taking it earlier doesn’t help, talk to your doctor about reducing the dose, even by 25mg sometimes can make a tremendous difference.

Yeh, take it earlier. Shower, coffee, some early exercise.
I too take Lamictal and Seroquel, but also Depakote and Lithium. I also found that as my bipolar got more under control, it had a stronger drag-my-butt effect. We started reducing and could do so to a point where the hang over became much less. Part of that reduction probably was possible by increasing Lithium which I find to have less side effects. So, maybe talk to your pdoc about tweaking the Seroquel and Lamictal a little. There’s a risk, but if you do it very slowly, it’s easy to catch before an episode starts to really happen.

Seroquel does give the hangover effect in a lot of people. If you’re only taking it before bedtime, ask your doctor if you can take it earlier. Also dosage for Seroquel varies – get your doctor’s opinion about reducing the dosage to something that’s effective but doesn’t leave you dragging the a.m.

I had the same problem. Just…what everyone else said…take it earlier if at all possible. That always seems to help. And make sure you’re getting a full nights sleep-which is probably not a problem due to the drowsiness it causes.

I had the same problem, started taking it a little earlier than usual. also take a shower as soon as im awake, seems to help some…. good luck

WOW! good luck!! :)
