They usually took it about 1/2 an hour before the procedure. It was used to make them less anxious about the dental work to be done and was from my experience very helpful to the patients. As an assistant and receptionist I heard who crazy scared people were before procedures and even if their fear was not rational or realistic to the work they were about to have done it was real to them and so if the lorazepam helped then all the better. Best of luck with your surgery tomorrow, I'm sure everything will go just fine. Take it one step at a time and you'll get through it. It really isnt nearly as scary or painful as friends will have you believe, people tend to blow things way out of proportion when they tell stories!
