I Am On Lithium And Klonopin, How Long Do I Have To Be Weened Off Klonopin Before Conception?

Posted by admin on Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I visited a specialist and Lithium if monitored during first 8weeks is Ok and I can’t breastfeed but what about Klonopin?
I want to start soon. How long will it take to be out of my system and withdrawls are quite severe…I tried weening before.

I think that you should rethik conceiving if you’re needing to take bipolar meds. It’s hard enough raising kids without all the extra burden of a disorder that could be passed down to the child. I don’t mean to sound……..cold and judgemental. I just feel that if you’re on this medication, then it’s for a reason. And possibly, you haven’t looked at this from EVERY angle. Besides, do you want to chance going off your meds while having an infant around?!!? Bad things happen when people whom require these meds, stop taking them.

I think Klonopin is only a problem in the late part of pregnancy, so it probably isn’t a problem if it isn’t out of your system before you concieve. Check with your pharmacist. Of course you could just get another woman to have your child for you, then you would not have to go off the meds at all.

If you need lithium and klonopin why are you trying to have a baby anyway? Are you sure you are capable of doing this very demanding job full time for 18 years??
