One is real medicine, the other is a fake powder that sounds alike.

GABA is a non-essential amino acid/neurotransmitter found in the human brain and eyes. It regulates brain and nerve cell activity by stopping neurons from firing, and therefore, preventing overstimulation. GABA, taken as a supplement, is supposed to exert a calming, relaxing, and anti-anxiety effect on the body. However, taken orally, it is completely ineffective because it doesn’t reach the brain, and therefore, has absolutely none of the effect it claims to have.
Neurontin (gabapentin) is structurally related to GABA, but the medication has no effect on GABA in the brain (doesn’t inhibit its reuptake, or increase levels) and it is not converted into GABA either. Neurontin is an anticonvulsant, and also has analgesic properties.
