Another New Adhd Drug Hits The Headlines

Posted by admin on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Yet another ADHD drug has hit the headlines and as usual it has several rather alarming drawbacks coupled with seemingly positive features. Clonidine for ADHD is mainly a blood pressure drug. It seems to be effective at lessening hyperactivity and impulsiveness. As it does not really help attention at all, it has to be taken together with a stimulant so now we have two drugs and both their side effects to cope with. All because they may have done well in the trials organised by the drug companies and because Clonidine side effects have been brushed under the carpet.Clonidine is also useful for reducing tics and Tourette’s Syndrome but at what price? Patients and children report feeling absolutely washed out, exhausted and weird. The reason is that it slows down the brain and reduces hyperactivity but at the same time causes fatigue.A related problem with Clonidine for ADHD is that it literally knocks some children and adults out! I know of one 5 year old boy who just cannot wake up in the morning although he is given Ritalin as a stimulant. Just to complete the Clonidine side effects, patients regularly complain about dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness and constipation. As Clonidine is a blood pressure drug, there is a risk that if you suddenly stop taking it for whatever reason there is a real danger of a sudden increase in blood pressure with all the risks that entails. It can also cause very low blood pressure when you take it which probably contributes to the feeling of fatigue. Patients should really monitor their blood pressure on a regular basis if they are on Clonidine for ADHD.As with all the ADHD drugs, it is the same old story. The drugs can help to control some of the symptoms of ADHD disorder such as hyperactivity, restlessness and inattention but at the same time cause such devastating side effects that it seems to ruin many a childhood. Clonidine side effects are no exception. Parents are now rebelling and looking at alternatives and beginning to question the use of psychostimulants and blood pressure drugs which they feel will compromise their children’s health. Why not take a look at the alternative therapies out there such as ADHD homeopathic remedies and make an informed choice. After all, your doctor, school and child’s teacher have given you their side of the story which is as biased as you can get. Time to look at the other side of the coin and make an informed choice. Clonidine side effects may become a distant memory. The onus is always on the parent to make the best decision for their child.
