How Long Do Side Effects From Atenolol (a Beta Blocker) Last?

Posted by admin on Saturday, October 10th, 2009

My husband was just started on Atenolol 50mg for Vasovagal Syncope, and is having reactions like diahrea, nausea, tiredness, dry eyes, etc. It says on the pamphlet these may occur, but it is enough to get him sent home from work. Does anyone have any info on this drug? Thanks!!

Hello there,
I have been taking Atenolol every day for the last 12 years since I had my first angioplasty. Luckily, I have had no side effects whatsoever. However, I was told at the time I was first prescribed it, that if I had any problems to let them know and they would give me an alternative beta blocker. Apparently there are several different drugs that can be used instead of Atenolol. Just ask your husband’s cardiologist to put him on a different beta blocker..

yeah, there are a lot of beta blockers out there, and they’re not all the same. I don’t tolerate some of them. He needs to see his doc and try a different one.
