what exactly does it do?
i was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and they prescribed it but i was told it doesnt do anything for the thyroid. i’m going to an endocrinologist to get whatever i need for the thyroid but why the **** am i taking this stuff then? it makes me dizzy and nauseous and i dont want to keep taking it if i dont have to.

It treats high blood pressure, and can be used to prevent heart attacks and chest pain. The way it works is by slowng the heart rate down and in turn, relaxing the blood vessels so that the heart does not has to pump as hard. It has nothing to do with your thyroid. Why were you prescribed Atenolol? For thyroid problems, they usually give something like Synthroid of any generics like Levothyroxine. Do you have any heart problems or chest pain? They totally prescribed you the wrong medication…time to find a new doctor…
The thyroid gland does have an important role in regulating your blood pressure an heart rate.
Your hyperthyroidism can end up in excess secretion of thyroid hormone, which in turn can increase your blood pressure and heart rate.
Atenolol is given to counteract the negative effects generated by hyperthyroidism,not treat the thyroid gland. It basically falls into the group of drugs called beta blockers.
I doubt it can make u nauseous though, try an alternative blood pressure lowering therapy by asking your doctors about calcium channel or potassium channel blockers.
Atenolol is a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure and hypothyroidism. I was on it for High blood pressure but the side effects were too much for me.
Side effects include allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
slow or uneven heartbeats;
feeling light-headed, fainting;
feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;
swelling of your ankles or feet;
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes);
depression; or
cold feeling in your hands and feet.
it counters some of the stimulant effects of the extra thyroid hormone, like lowering blood pressure and slowing down heart rate. it will help symptoms for the time being until they treat the cause, but no it wont actually cure the problem. talk to your doctor before you stop taking it, if your blood pressure is really through the roof it can be dangerous not to do anything about it. lots of times the side effects get better after a couple weeks too.
I know I used to be on it. It does make you feel like crap. Tell your doctor how you feel and ask a pharmacist. There may be something that you can take that does not have as many side effects.
