Can A Recently Increased Dosage Of Amitriptyline Cause Numbness?

Posted by admin on Monday, December 14th, 2009

I had been prescribed amitriptyline for depression about 3 months ago and my dosage has recently been increased to 75 mg from 25 mg. I am currently experiencing severe numbness of my skin and limbs – especially my arms and legs. I have also lost weight recently due to some stomach issues. Should I reduce my dose back to 25 mg? Should I go to a clinic or the hospital or will these symptoms lessen? If anyone has any serious advice or could share similar experiences, I would really appreciate it. thank you

I’ve been taking 150 mg of amitriptyline for 8 years without any of the side effects that you are experiencing. Every ones different though and I do think it would be wise of you to speak with the prescribing Dr. before you adjust your dose. There might be another reason for your numbness and I think it should be investigated first

Yes, numbness and tingling of the limbs and skin are known side effects of amytriptyline. There are also a number of gastointestinal side effects that are likely contributing to your weight loss. The side effects listed below were taken from the link I’ve included in “Source”. I do suggest that you talk to your doctor before changing your dosage. The dosage was most likely increased because the lower dose was not eliminating your symptoms. It’s possible that a more gradual increase in dose would allow your body to tolerate to the side effects. Good luck, and feel free to contact me through Yahoo/Answers
Neurologic: incoordination, ataxia, numbness, tingling and paresthesias of the extremities, extrapyramidal symptoms, syncope, changes in EEG patterns
Gastrointestinal: nausea, epigastric distress, vomiting, anorexia, stomatitis, peculiar taste, diarrhea, black tongue

call your pharmacy. the pharmacist will be able to answer your questions these ppl on yahoo answers don’t have the intelligence and schooling a licensed pharmacist does
